If you're struggling to find time to read the Bible, maybe this will help you. I know that this one change I'll share with you today has really helped me and doesn't take more time from my schedule. Instead, it creates benefits throughout my life.
I'm Too Busy
I don't know about you, but sometimes I struggle to get everything done. It seems like there's always an amazing amount of stuff on my plate. Now, I realize that I do that to myself and it's probably something that comes more from the culture I live in than God's leading. But at the same time, it is the reality I live in. It's my “starting point” if you will.
A few days ago, I was on a walk and I was asking God about this. I was asking whether there was something in my life that he would have me change. Something that would allow me to spend more time in the Word and in prayer. What he said surprised me.
I expected him to start listing of things he would have me trim or prune out of my life. I expected Him to say, “Stop doing _____” or something like that. But He didn't. Instead, I felt like what he would have me do was add something to my life. That He would like to go on walks with me during my lunch.
What does that mean?
Well, at the time I didn't know. I still expected to hear him say something like, “Stop recording interviews,” or “Stop updating the Church website,” or “Step down from the worship team.” But He didn't.
As I kept asking and pressing, I felt that what he was asking me to do was simply listen to him as I was going on a walk. Not that I couldn't talk, but that the focus should be on listening.
And I remembered that I had a way to do that in my back pocket right then. My iPhone.
An iPhone can help my relationship with God?!
Normally we don't think of an iPhone is a good way to connect with God. Often it's a distraction. Something that keeps us away from the things that we need to do or from spending time with family. And often, that's true.
But as with anything, it's entirely possible for us to use it for good as well as to be controlled by it.
There are a few apps I use in my devotions and quiet time. One of them is the YouVersion Bible, which I've been using for several years. Honestly, I think it's a great app. It's the only Bible app I use.
But there's one function I hadn't used a lot.
The YouVersion Bible isn't just a Bible-reading app. It's also a Bible-listening app. That's right. In many translations I can listen to the Bible while I'm on the go. And that's how I've started taking walks with God.
When I go on a walk, I simply fire up the old iPhone, pull up a passage of Scripture, and pop in my headphones. Then as I'm walking I listen to the word, and I listen for God to speak through the word. I ask the Holy Spirit to open up my heart and my mind to what God would tell me and then I just listen.
Is it magic? No. It's God.
Even if I don't feel like God gives me a specific revelation, I know that I am listening to God's voice because I'm hearing his word. It doesn't take any extra time out of my day. But it allows me to spend more time with God that I was.
It's been great!
My times with God in my headphones have been wonderful! I've heard his voice in and through his word. I feel more connected to him. And I feel like I'm noticing more of things going on around me in the world. And I believe He's using this time to transform my heart, mind, and life one step at a time in my continuing quest to be conformed to the image of Christ.
If you're struggling to find time to spend with God and the Word, maybe this'll work for you. If it does, I'd love it if you would leave a comment in the notes and let me know how God is using this in your life.
